Time is flying in First Grade!
We are right in the middle of our first Science Unit - Forces and Motion. We've been learning all about pushes, pulls, and friction. In class, students have had several opportunities to complete hands-on science experiments and write about the results in their Science Notebooks. Today we had a Tug-of-War competition with the other First Grade classes to see how strong our pulling force was.
In Math we've been practicing our addition skills and I am very proud of how quickly everyone is catching on. Not only are students finding ways to solve simple addition word problems, they are able to share their answers and explain their reasoning to their peers.
Reading Assessments began this week. Students are being assessed with me, one on one, on a variety of reading skills. I'm hoping to be done soon so we can start Guided Reading - my favorite part of the day!
While I've been assessing, Ms. Ward and the students have been working hard in Work Stations. Students are reading and writing in a variety of ways around the room and they are doing a good job of working independently and building up their stamina. (Stamina is how long you can do something and we've learned that reading and writing for a long period of time sometimes makes our "brain sweat". But, just like every other muscle in our body, the only way to make our brain strong is to exercise, exercise, exercise. We're up to 15 minutes of stamina and I could not be more proud!)
We're looking forward to another busy week at JWS. Remember, students will dismiss early on Friday.
