In preparation for the upcoming Read Across America week, students and teachers celebrated Book Character Day on Friday. Students were encouraged to dress like their favorite book character and complete a mini report on their character. Students presented their reports to the class and they all did a wonderful job! Ms. Ward and I were so proud of the creativity students' showed in their costumes, as well as the quality work they put into their presentations.
As you've probably heard, we've spent the past few weeks L. Frank Baum's The Wizard of Oz as part of our "Winds of Change" ELA Unit. Students (and teachers alike) have absolutely loved reading this classic! We focused on different character traits throughout the book and how each character changed throughout the story. The Lion, for example, started out as a coward but found courage. The First Grade teachers had fun dressing up as the characters from the story for Book Character Day! This unit was also a great time to focus on a variety of literacy skills with a magical, Emerald City twist! Students had fun highlighting verbs, nouns, and adjectives in different Wizard of Oz sentences!
According to the popular children's book by Laura Numeroff, If You Give a Dog a Donut... he's going to ask for some apple juice, triggering a funny chain of events and posing the question - what would happen if you gave a dad a donut. Students came up with some interesting theories and we put them to the test on Friday during our annual Donuts with Dad event. Students had a fun time preparing several special treats to show our dads how much they mean to them, but not nearly as much fun as being able to spend the morning with them. We've officially survived 101 days of First Grade! We had a lot of fun celebrating the 100th day of school but even more fun celebrating the 101st day of 1st grade! We've spent a lot of time this week skip counting, finding number patterns in a hundreds chart, making groups of ten in different ways, and even making a few predictions into the future and what our "100 year old self will be like! Do you recognize these wrinkly faces? |
