Thursday night we had our annual Science Night...this year with a Duck Dynasty theme! Students and parents had fun rotating through "the swamp" to complete different Science experiments and activities.
Before we left for a much needed Spring Break, we had our First Grade Easter Egg Hunt and Spring Celebrations.
A HUGE thank you to the Fifth Grade students who counted our eggs, divided them by how many students we had, and hid them all! (It was almost 2,000 eggs!) Mrs. Dunn had some April Fool's fun by switching everyone's desks around! It was a silly way to start the day!
The whole school got a little wacky on Friday for our Wacky Tacky Spirit Day! Our smiles were a little bigger, and a lot sillier, as we practiced our reading skills and math strategies dressed as silly, mix-matched students.
We've started learning about soil and all the important nutrients found in soil that ultimately help plants grow and survive. We spent some time this week "digging into" the different types of soil found in our own backyards. We got a little dirty and found lots of different living and nonliving things.
St. Patricks Day was an interesting day at JWS. We had a sneaky friend leave some green, glittery foot prints around our room and even discovered a pot of (chocolate) gold.
Since we've been learning about informative writing we chose to teach what we would do to catch a sneaky leprechaun. Our stories were so interesting we decided to type our final drafts and display them in the hallway! We've been busy learning how to read digital and analog clocks to tell time to the hour and half hour. We spent one afternoon roaming the room to "spy" and record different times.
Our compliment chain hit the floor...again! Which means we got to have another class celebration! Students voted to spend a little extra time with Leo and Squirt, out of their tank! So for Recess (after talking extensively about germs and turtle safety), we let Leo and Squirt run (a little) wild! The playground was filled with giggles and squeals and the sound of tiny turtle feet racing across the pavement!
Monday, March 2nd was Dr. Seuss's birthday which kicked off a fun-filled week full of reading and celebrating many influential authors! After learning about Dr. Seuss and reading several of his infamous silly-rhyming, tongue-twisting books, our class focused on another beloved author, Kevin Henkes. Kevin Henkes has written many children's books using his recognizable mice characters. These funny little characters have quite the personalities and almost always teach us a valuable life lesson. We hit a lot our literacy standards throughout the week as we read his books. We compared and contrasted different stories, discussed character traits, talked about theme, mood, and writing style. A poster of our work was displayed around the library as part of our school wide Author Study Wall of Fame. We loved sharing things we learned about Kevin Henkes and seeing what other classes had learned about their chosen author as well. While we had lots of "favorite parts" throughout the week, we definitely loved using the iPods and QR codes to listen to different Kevin Henkes books in Guided Reading. We ended the week with a special reading, from a special visitor (Mrs. Dunn's dad!)
In preparation for the upcoming Read Across America week, students and teachers celebrated Book Character Day on Friday. Students were encouraged to dress like their favorite book character and complete a mini report on their character. Students presented their reports to the class and they all did a wonderful job! Ms. Ward and I were so proud of the creativity students' showed in their costumes, as well as the quality work they put into their presentations.
