To further our learning about NC habitats, we traveled to the coastal region! We visited the Pine Knoll Shores Aquarium where we saw both fresh and saltwater habitats up close! We also took a picnic lunch at Fort Macon and had a chance to get our toes in the sand!
Thanks to a grant written by Mrs. B, we were able to observe and take care of caterpillars in our classroom again this year. Each student was given their own baby caterpillar to take care of throughout their life cycle. We observed our caterpillar's grow, form a chrysalis, and emerge as butterflies over the course of a few weeks. Before releasing our butterflies in nature, we released them in a big tent first and were given the chance to hang out with them outside. The whole process was a great learning opportunity for our students and a hands-on experience they are not likely to forget anytime soon! We celebrated the special women in our life with a delicious muffin breakfast and a few other special treats. Gaining inspiration from Laura Numeroff's If You Give a Moose a Muffin, we spent the morning testing our theories of what might just happen if you give a MOM a muffin.
The rain couldn't stop us from "sailing the seven seas" through Field Day! We had so much fun working together as a team to complete different activities.
...will he want some milk? Or another donut? Or maybe a napkin in case he makes a mess? Students put their predictions to the test by inviting their dads and other special men in their lives to school Friday morning for a yummy donut treat. Of course, students had worked hard to create a few extra surprises to tell these men just how loved they are! A special thanks to Mrs. Leslie Heath, one of my maternity leave subs, who entertained students and dads alike with a read aloud of If You Give a Dog a Donut, because after all, the only thing better than sharing a donut with your dad is sharing a good book!
We survived 100 Days of First Grade! And what better way to celebrate than a t-shirt fashion show! Students spent the week scouring their houses for 100 items to add to a t-shirt, and on Friday they got to strut their stuff on the red carpet (which was the most fun, hence the blurry runway pictures)!
For Twin Day, we decided to pick a friend in our classroom to be twins with for the day! Students had fun choosing a twin and coordinating their outfits. We enjoyed seeing double all day long!
To conclude our unit on Goods and Services we transformed our classroom into a Skittles Factory. Students had to first advertise our product, determine factory hours, and apply for different jobs within the factory. We then set a temporary price range for our product, knowing that the price could possibly change due to changes in supply and demand. After everything was set up, students got to work, sorting and bagging skittles. Our bosses did a great job overseeing the process and being aware of their employer's needs. Our runners kept things moving slowly and our clean up crew made sure we met sanitation requirements! The managers of the factory (Ms. Ward and myself) were very pleased with the productivity of our workers, so much so that many received a bonus for exemplary work ethic on pay day. Once students cashed in their checks, they were able to purchase skittles of their choice! Students enjoyed getting in the holiday spirit by learning about holiday celebrations around the world, creating ornaments for downtown businesses, enjoying hot chocolate treats, and exchanging Secret Santa gifts with our friends! Of course, our favorite part of the season was taking time to remind our friends and family how thankful we are of them!
